Pilot Private Wireless Network FAQ
Who is JMA Wireless?
JMA Wireless is locally owned here in Syracuse, which makes it the only American owned 5G manufacturing company in the US. We employ over 500 people in the Syracuse area alone, and we have 10 locations across the globe. For our concert enthusiasts and sports fans, you’ll love to know we are currently powering over 170 smart stadiums.
What is the goal of the private wireless network?
This wireless network provides improved bandwidth, accelerated speed of connectivity and increased coverage. From completing classwork to gaming to sharing your content on your social media channels, the private wireless network will ensure a seamless experience from your device.
Is this replacing Wi-Fi?
No. This provides additional connectivity options throughout campus. AirOrangeX will still exist.
Where is the Network active?
The network is currently active in all residents’ halls, libraries, dining centers, outdoors, major classrooms and the JMA Wireless Dome! Check out the map to all the buildings where the network is active.
Can my computer connect to the network?
Yes, your computer can be connected through tethering. All you need is your phone, computer and a charging cable. Instructions for tethering and a tutorial video are located on in the “Computer” section of this site. To request a dongle, please reach out to onboarding@jmawireless.com or come see us on campus.
Phone FAQ’s
Can I still connect to the network after buying a new phone?
Yes, you can still connect to the network after buying a new phone. There are a few items to keep in mind when purchasing a new phone.
- Making sure your phone will be unlocked once the phone is purchased. You will not be able to join the network if your phone is locked. Consult your carrier as needed.
- Check your self-serve account for a new QR code to rejoin the network on your new phone.
How do I request a new QR code?

How do I know if my phone is locked or unlocked?
If you have any model of iPhone 11-14 you will find if your phone is locked or unlocked in the settings.
Go to Settings > General > About > Carrier lock.

How do I know what model my phone is?
Go to Settings > General > About > Model name.
How do I use my personal hotspot on my phone while still on the private network?
If you are on the private network and having trouble locating your personal hotspot you will need to adjust a few settings on your phone.
Go to settings > Cellular > JMA private network plan > Cellular data network > Scroll down to personal hotspot > Under APN type any character and then an asterisk (ex: S*).
I have done all the steps to connect to the private network, how do I know I have done it correctly?
One way you can check this is by pulling down your screen on your phone. In the top left-hand corner, you will see the private network on top of your carrier. If the network is not on top of your carrier, please read the below FAQ to fix.
I scanned my QR code, and I have been stuck on the activate eSim screen, what do I do?
Technology is always advancing. Sometimes faster than we are ready for. If you see a spinning wheel in this stage, you might have to re-scan your QR code. If this does not work, you will have to try again later.
I’m not sure if the network is set up correctly, how can I tell?

I scanned my QR code, and I have been stuck on the activate eSIM screen, what do I do?
The eSIM activation could take up to a minute. If it still doesn’t work, try closing any open tabs on the device. Then, scan the QR code again.
What if my phone restarts after connecting to the private network?
Not a problem! You just need to follow the steps and log back into your Apple ID.
